There are alternate ways of creating safe communities that we have already seen, both with the COVID-19 outbreak and the riots happening across the States. Black communities can and have been showing up for one another by keeping each other safe, sharing resources, space, time and energy.

During the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of black and racialized organizers in Hamilton got together to discuss the future that we want to see in Hamilton Ontario. Groups in this coalition include but are not limited to: HWDSB Kids Need Help, the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion, the SPACE Youth Centre, and more. One of the top three priorities that we decided to take on was policing, as this predominantly impacts our communities. Very quickly after, with the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, we became aware of the global resistance against policing and surveillance that was about to ensue.
